The novel tells the story in the perspective of Pip, and descriptions of
his mental activities can be seen everywhere in the story. The author
describes the growth experience of a naïve and kind-hearted protagonist
Pip, successfully combines personal life experience with social
criticism and profoundly reveals the corrosive effect of the evil social
forces on the main character. This novel highlights the main idea that
love, loyalty and conscience play a more important role in life than
wealth and social status. In essence, Pip is a typical idealist who
dreams of getting himself a promising future. He is also the embodiment
of the novel’s core idea. When he found something better waiting for
him, he would strive for it without hesitation. When he saw the
beautiful estate of Miss Havisham, he hoped that he could become a true
gentleman. It is his endless pursuit of himself that determines the
theme of the novel. In the novel, Dickens made an in-depth discussion on
the conventional class system that existed in Britain. In the story, Pip
finally realized that wealth and status were far more less important
than people’s initial feelings. All in all, “Great Expectation” is a
novel with highly moral consciousness, which arises readers’ interests
and deep thinking. Both the revelation of social phenomena behind the
story and the deep sympathy to people in this novel represent the social
sense of responsibility and noble morality of Dickens. It is a book
worth reading.
