choice
罗岚莎
Since ancient times, money and love have been a difficult choice. When
people face these two things at the same time, some people will give up
love for money, while some people will choose the beautiful love without
hesitation and give up the hard-won money. O Henry's short story
"One Thousand Dollars" tells the story of a young man who
racked his brains to spend the one thousand dollars left by his uncle
before he died, and finally realized his dream to have a perfect love
story. In young people's world, love is more valuable than all the
money, which makes people feel the preciousness of love. Richard Wallin
had been a little troubled of late. He did not know what to do with the
thousand dollars left by his uncle. Not long before, he had been
informed by his lawyer, "Your uncle has said that as soon as you
have spent the money, you must give me a written report, which will give
you the particulars of how you have spent it. It was your uncle's last
wish, it was written in the will. I hope you will do as he tells
you." Richard Walling was not a bad guy and was good at painting,
but he was completely clueless about money management. When my uncle was
alive, he always spent money to support him. Every time he got the
money, he spent it all and did not know how to save. So this time, when
he was faced with a thousand dollars in his hand, he hesitated a little.
"Give the money to a man who is good at spending money, and he will
get happiness from it. I could buy a jewel for an amorous pretty woman,
Clara Lane, who sang in the theatre, was pretty, but she was wearing a
jewel ring worth thousands of dollars, and she could get no happiness
from a ring worth only a thousand dollars. I could give the money to the
concierge at the firm, who had said he would open a hotel when he had
the money, but it was not a good use for money. I could have given it to
that blind man who sat begging in the square, but they gave him a lot of
money. He must have more than a thousand dollars in the bank now, and he
doesn't need it." After much thought, he decided to take the sum
and propose to Miss Haydn. Haydn was the daughter of a friend of his
uncle, and she, like the servants, had a gold ring and a hundred
dollars. According to Richard Walling, Haydn was the most beautiful
woman in the world. But when he plucked up the courage to propose, he
felt a little foolhardy. After all, his family was very poor. Later, he
wrote a letter to his lawyer describing the source of the money. After
receiving the letter, the lawyer began to announce, "The papers say
that if you show your selflessness by spending the $1,000 on a good
cause, you will receive another $100,000. But if you waste it, give it
to his friend's daughter, Mary Haydn." Richard Walling was the
first to tell him that he had squandered the money before the lawyer
could read it. Then Haydn came along, and told Richard that she would
accept his marriage. So, in the end, neither of them could get the
inheritance, but they did get the most beautiful love, which no amount
of money could buy back.
