Ture Power

The novel tells a story about an old but energetic fisherman,Santiago.One day,he ventured out into uncharted sea area to fish,eager for big results.To his utter surprise,he found a Marlin fish which is so huge that it took three days for the man to defeat it.On the way back, the blood of the big Marlin fish attracted the attack of the shark.With all his might,he fought off the shark with his harpoon and oar successfully.Nonetheless,unfortunately,when arrived,only the bones of the fish is left.

What does it mean to fail?Maybe it means do not reach the desired goals.On the contrary,the man who fights against fate or who push himself to the limit,is close to this failure naturally.As Santiago said,man was not born for failure,one can be destroyed,but can’t be defeated.Although he did not get big results,he always pluck up courage to meet challenge.On the road of life,failure means losing the faith to overcome the obstacles.The man who has not laid down his arms has not lost the battle.From the point of the view,the old fisherman never failed,because he always had high spirits.As contemporary college students,we ought to study the old fisherman's spirit in the life. No matter what the results is,they are the true winner.

This passage left a deep impression on me.I am sorry that I killed the fish though,he thought.Now the bad time is coming and I do not even have the harpoon.The shark is cruel and able and strong and intelligent.But I was more intelligent than he was.Perhaps not,he thought.Perhaps I was only better armed.The old man was so optimistic that he never gave up and went home safely.It’s universally acknowledged that hope is something that can be created with an optimistic state of mind. As long as you have an optimistic state of mind,you are bound to lead to a wonderful life.Just as a famous saying,smile and the world smiles with you,weep and you weep alone. Hence,It’s a must to be hopeful and make a supreme effort to meet the challenge in the life.

Another character is a little boy.He loved the old fisherman and pitied him. If he had no money of his own, he begged or stole to make sure that Santiago had enough to eat and fresh baits for his lines. The old man accepted his kindness with humility that was like a quiet kind of pride.From them,I learned a lot about love.Nowadays,we are living in a society where people helped each other in many ways.The old man and the little boy depended on each other and lighted up each other’s lives.From the point of my view,The reason why the old man can come back smoothly is because the old man kept the boy in mind forever.How marvellous the friendship is!We should treat our friends with courtesy and cherish and treasure friendship by means of words and deeds.

It’s such a perfect book that make me have not given full expression to it.As a student,I am bound to learn from the man and obtain tremendous success.
