Protagonist Antonio and noble young Bassanio face the test of life and
death, their friendship is more selfless. The Merchant of Venice, like
Shakespeare's other plays, shows his love for life and his yearning for
youth. I think the plot twists and turns of this play are interesting,
overflowing with a very strong comedy color, and also reflects
Shakespeare's cheerful and optimistic personality in life. There is a
character in it who is hateful and sympathetic at the same time. His
name is Shylock, and he is a Jew and a profitabler. He was mercenary and
insatiable, but he was also a discriminated Jew. One of his memorable
words on behalf of oppressed Jews: "Do jews have no eyes, no
features, no limbs, no senses, no feelings, no blood? Does he not eat
the same food, suffer the same weapons, need the same medical treatment,
feel cold in winter, and hot in summer, as a Christian?" He gave an
unjust cry for a people suffering. I like that Portia better. She is
elegant and noble, gentle and affectionate, with a high degree of
wisdom, dare to wit and decisive into action, with their own actions to
prove that women are not worse than men.
