Book Review

Maidi

The book is a first-person account of the author's understanding of Charles Strickland. Before reading this book, I would have loved the protagonists in every book I had ever read. They were with nearly perfect personalities. However, my feelings for the protagonist Strickland in this book is a mixture of dislike and admiration.

Although there are not many characters in the book, each of them is unforgettable. Such as gentle and amiable Mrs. Strickland, clever Rose Waterford, the kind and selfless Dirk Stroeve , and his beautiful and bold wife and so on. But in this book, my favorite character is Dirk. The poor man was always looked down upon and belittled by the people around him, but he never held a grudge. Strickland was so mean to him, but he still recognized Strickland' ability. When Strickland was seriously ill, he took him back to his house and cared for him as a family member. However, this caused him to lose his wife. It was all so cruel, but he was willing to forgive Strickland. What a great and generous spirit. God most wants his people to be big-hearted people, and Dirk is the one who pleases God the most.

In fact, the plot of the book is very simple. In my opinion, there are only two episodes that make people exciting. The first is when Strickland abandons his wife and children .The second is the circumstances of Mrs. Dirk's death. In these two plots, there is a sharp contrast between The hysterical struggle of three people and the ruthless indifference of Strickland. These two things make me think of Strickland as an irresponsible man, so I feel sick of him! There is nothing wrong with pursuing dream, but we should also take up our social responsibilities.

But I also admire Strickland. Because he's a real artist. At the age of 40, he abandoned all his material desires and devoted himself to art. Even when he was alive, his paintings were not recognized by many people, but he still loved to paint. He doesn't care about anyone's approval at all. He just wants to be happy and reach the other side of his art. Happily, he finally found a satisfying home on Tahiti Island. Tahiti is an island with beautiful scenery and simple primitive people. Here he found the inspiration he was looking for and did something of great value before he died. His persistence finally made his dream come true.

As is said in this book:pettiness and grandeur, malice and charity, hatred and love, can find place side by side in the same heart. No one is perfect.

Although the whole book has no ups and downs of the plot, but the author W. Somerset Maugham  described every detail delicately, so that readers do not feel boring. This book will make one think a lot about life. In a word, it is worth reading.
