book review

Yuzuru Hanyu

When I was in primary school, it was a time when Harry Potter gained increasing popularity and if you never read or even heard about it, you would be considered out of date. The magic world J.K. Rowling created for both the characters and the readers is so charming that we believed someday in the future we would receive admission to Hogwarts of our own.

However, this time the author does not focus on how the magic world was founded and worked. Instead, she looks into the psychological theories Harry Potter tells us.

In this book, the author introduces the topic by quoting some typical passages, thus providing an authentic glimpse of the theories. Furthermore, she offers a great number of examples attached with analysis, giving convincing evidence. What attracts me most is the separate part for activities. It helps to explore the inner selves buried deep in our hearts, to write down things bothering you recently and to deal with them. It is just like silent psychological counseling, in which the leader communicates with you through written words rather than spoken ones.

The bridge the author built between the plot of Harry Potter and psychology leaves me the deepest impression. Many have said that they are inspired by the spirit of Harry Potter, but they never know how it works. It is of great interest to find how the logical plot influences our mindset and our attitude towards life unconsciously. Additionally, when matched with the familiar passage, the boring theories seem to be alive and achievable.

Among all the parts, the power of tragedy is the most beneficial to me. Though I have heard words like “those cannot beat you bring out your potential”, it seems to be comfort rather than truth. Those examples occur just by coincidence, and there is little possibility to happen to me. Tragedies I experienced leave me only bad memories, whenever I think of which I become upset and unsatisfied with myself. Nevertheless, when I followed the instruction doing the activities of exploring myself, I found the bright sides of the tragedies. They are covered by the down mood, becoming unseen, and this book casts a light on them.

Reading the book is like an adventure, not knowing what you would be confronted with, so as what truly you are like. Not only does it present various psychological theories, but provides a chance to apply them to yourself. One will be surprised to find how they take effect in daily routines, affecting your behaviors and controlling your life.

Given all this, it is highly recommended to have a look at this book. Harry Potter is a hero in our hearts, but this book tells us what he does or chooses is something we can do as well. Everyone can become a hero, the power of which is buried deep in our hearts. There is no need to be envious of others’ achievements. What you should do is just discover them, bring them out and believe in yourselves.
