A cup of tea

At the beginning of the novel, Rosemary's appearance, family situation and regular behavior in daily life are described, which directly shows us a woman who is plain-looking, arty, narcissistic, and pitiless to the people at the bottom around her. Before the appearance of the beggar, the author focused on the conversation between Rosemary and the shop owner when she wanted to buy the beautiful and unique little box. I think the beggar in the following is just like the box that attracted Rosemary because of its uniqueness. Rosemary lived a rich life, she could not understand why the beggar did not even have a dollar, but also thought that helping her will make her image become more glorious and great, not only can be used to talk about in the same class, but also can make the beggar treat her as a fairy existence. When she took the beggarto her home, she even forgot the original intention of the beggar seeking her help. She only showed her thoughtfulness, she thought it was, to the beggar until she said she was going to faint from hunger. When she took the beggar's clothes and hats, she thought to herself that the people being helped should at least give a little help, which was in contrast to the previous content of letting the maid carry many things she bought without any fluctuation in her heart, which satirized her hypocrisy. Rosemary had thought of keeping the beggar in the house, like a doll, until Philip said that he was attracted by the beggar's beauty, but as soon as she learned that the beggar might take away her husband's attention, she changed her mind immediately and sent the beggar away with three dollars. This profile reflects Rosemary's insecurity, despite her husband's adoration. And the fact that she can't tolerate anything that threatens her. She changed the amount of money she gave to the beggar three times, refusing to give even five yuan, which showed me that she had no real pity. At last, Rosemary, in her make-up, came to Philip, and first asked him for the blue velvet box,to show to herself that she still owned Pilip's affection. Finally, she asked Philip was she pretty. I think, in fact, Rosemary knew that she was not attractive. She was not very confident in her appearance. She needed to rely on Philip to get what she wanted, so she could not lose Philip's attention. This reflects the strong attachment of women to men in the society at that time.
