Pride and Prejudice
赵欣瑶
In a small village, the Bennetts has five unmarried daughters-from
oldest to youngest, Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. And Mrs.
Bennett is desperate to see them all married. That time a wealthy young
gentleman named Charles Bingley has rented the manor of Netherfield
Park. After Mr. Bennett pays a social visit to Mr. Bingley, the Bennetts
attend a ball at which Mr. Bingley is present. He likes Jane and spends
much of the evening dancing with her. His close friend, Mr. Darcy, is
less pleased with the evening and haughtily refuses to dance with
Elizabeth, which makes everyone view him as arrogant and
obnoxious. However, Mr. Darcy finds himself increasingly attracted to
Elizabeth’s intelligence and charm at social functions over subsequent
weeks. Mr. Darcy makes a proposal of marriage to Elizabeth. She turns
him down. Jane’s friendship with Mr. Bingley also continues to burgeon,
and Jane pays a visit to the Bingley mansion. Because of rain, Jane
falls ill and has to stay at Neitherfield for several days. In order to
take care of Jane, Elizabeth comes to Neitherfield through difficulties.
And Elizabeth meets Miss. Bingley. Miss. Bingley’s spite increases when
she notices that Darcy, whom she loves, pays quite a bit of attention to
Elizabeth. After meeting Mr. Wickham and learning his story, Elizabeth’s
aversion to Mr. Darcy has further intensified. However, after visiting
the Collins and again refusing Mr. Darcy’s proposal of marriage,
Elizabeth receives a letter from Darcy. And she knows the truth,
gradually changes the prejudice to Darcy. In the next summer, she meets
Darcy again and finds that he is no longer arrogant. Finally, Elizabeth
wins his marriage proposal. They live happily together. In this book,
Elizabeth is intelligent, resourceful, courageous and visionary. She has
a strong sense of self-respect and is good at thinking. Darcy is of
noble birth and too proud, but he is wise and changes when he is wrong.
In this novel, through the different treatment of Bennett’s five
daughters to the life event, it shows the different attitudes of the
girls from the middle-class families in the town to the marriage and
love issues. And it reflects the author’s own view of marriage: it is
wrong to marry for property, money and status. And it would be foolish
to get married without taking them into account. Therefore, she is not
only opposed to marry for money, but also opposed to take marriage as a
child’s game. She emphasizes the importance of an ideal marriage, and
takes the feelings of both men and women as the cornerstone of an ideal
marriage.Pride and Prejudice has a tortuous but happy ending of love
story. And it rushes to the heart of every reader. I believe that the
power of love can guide people to correct themselves, but also believe
that we can continue to expand our narrow heart. We will become a stable
and mature person.
