The Sorrow of Young Werther is an epistolary novel. In the book, young Werther fell in love with a girl called Charlotte. However, she has engaged to another man. In the conflict between reason and sensibility, Werther chose to commit suicide.
I feel pity for Werther. Actually, he was special for his time. Sincere and kind, he won the love of a lot of people. He pursued freedom and equality, desiring to engage in practical and useful work. He didn't go with the world, but he failed to change his fate. He himself fell into a hopeless love, and his low social status and cynical attitude made him frustrated at work and in life. Finally he left this world with disappointment. The novel is a criticism of society, it expresses the spirit of resistance of German youth and was spread around the world.
