The author used irony to express her views on marriages. She was
against marrying people for money and treating marriage as a joke. She
stressed the importance of the relationship between the man and the
woman in a marriage. Mrs. Bennet always wanted to find rich and powerful
husbands for her daughters. Lydia behaved frivolously and made a mockery
of her marriage. Charlotte chose a marriage without love. These were all
denied by the author. Elizabeth, however, was intelligent, courageous,
forward-looking, and has a strong sense of self-respect. It was
precisely because of these qualities that she had an independent opinion
on the issue of love, and helped her to form a happy family with Darcy.
Additionally, Jane Austen reflected women's pursuit of independent
personality and equal power through the character of Elizabeth. Through
the marriages of Elizabeth's sister and best friend, Austen revealed the
social tragedy that was covered under the gorgeous cloak at that time. I
agree with Jane Austen that both men and women have the right to pursue
their own happiness, for everyone is independent and equal. As for
marriage, property is needed to be considered, but it is not just about
money and status.
