Rational and Emotion
Julie
As the title shows, the story revolves around the conflict between
"reason" and "emotion". At the beginning of the
novel, the author accounts for Eleanor's character, a
"emotional" and "cool-headed" young girl. From the
development of the plot, it can be seen that Eleanor acted basically in
accordance with the social and moral standards of the time, suppressing
their true feelings, treating family, neighbors and friends are trying
to do the "principle of the best." She chose her subjects
without a heavy meter, but with character and falling in love with
Edward, who was frank and enthusiastic. Later found that Edward had
already made a marriage contract with others, although she was extremely
sad, but she was able to try to restrain themselves, sociable, as usual,
nothing. At the same time, Eleanor is not short of emotion. After Edward
was abandoned by his mother and Lucy, Eleanor remained deeply fond of
him, because he was a lifelong partner and had acquired her true love.
The novel also begins with a description of the character of Eleanor's
sister, Marian, whose talents are comparable in many ways to her
sister's: sensible, intelligent, generous, lovely, pleasing, but more
emotional. It is not difficult to see that at the beginning of the
story, Marianne has a wealth of emotions, but lack of rational
constraints, many times she follows the "principle of
happiness": do not care about other people's thoughts and opinions
and social moral standards, everything is by their own sex, by personal
feelings. When Colonel Brandon, thirty-five, courted her, she turned a
blind eye to her because she was too old. Then, the unexpected encounter
with willoughby, the "beautiful" light son, made her lose all
her sanity and fall in love. However, the other side's betrayal made her
self-deprecating, almost buried her life. Fortunately, the painful
lesson, her sister's example, finally made her rational, and finally
married Colonel Brandon, who had always been devoted to her. Throughout
the work, the author finally admires the heroine Eleanor, because she is
both emotional and rational. Through this work, the author reveals her
personal idea that people should have both reason and emotion, in
dealing with problems, can not always let emotions vent out without
control, let alone let their own reason for pathological emotions suppressed.
