The role of the boy?
'A man can be destroyed but not defeated.'This is the sentence that impressed me the most and affected me the most.Although before reading this famous story I had already understood that it was a story about an old man with strong will who went fishing hard but came back with nothing when I carefully read the emotion conveyed by each English letter I had a more detailed and deeper understanding. But in addition to the spirit that the old man brought to me I was interested in another person beside him -- the little boy. So in this world famous book the little boy's description is very few which makes me think and question. What is the role of the little boy in this passage? I will explain my views from the following three aspects based on my understanding.
The boy is the old man's spiritual support, his source of warmth. The old man had no family around him and was always on his own. He was used to loneliness. But the boy's appearance let the old man have emotional sustenance so that the old man felt warmth and love. To the old man, the boy is a comrade-in-arms but more like family. When the old man went to sea ,he talked about the boy many times when he was happy when he was sad all because he missed the boy and felt lonely without him. Before the old man went to sea the boy felt guilty because he could not go to sea and always wanted to do something for the old man. When the old man came back the boy wept bitterly for his injury and silently helped him prepare food. When the old man saw the boy he directly expressed "I miss you" to him. When the old man felt defeated the boy told him firmly that he was not defeated. I was deeply moved by their interaction because their love for each other went both ways.
The boy is the epitome of the old man's youth a symbol of strength. When the old man went to sea his hands got cramp then injury and his strength gradually weakened which made him recall his youth to prove himself. The old man once won the championship after a day and a night of stalemate in the hand strength competition so the strength of the old man can be imagined how powerful. The old man is no longer young but the young man is the boy. The boy is full of vigor and vitality daring to try and take risks representing youth and power. I think every time the old man saw the boy he would also think of his own glorious moments in his youth.
The boy is the inheritor of the old man's spirit of perseverance the successor of the fishing career. Hemingway's old man is a tough image but also a representative of heroism. He has a strong unyielding never give up strong quality has a heart as hard as bone and like iron will. It is because of these characteristics that he successfully defeated the big marlin at this age. He also has years of fishing experience that needs to be passed on. The boy has the same blood and will as the old man which represents the inheritor of perseverance.
In fact there are still many details waiting for me to discover the role and symbol of the boy in this famous novel and his existence may also have a deeper meaning. In addition in the latter part of the article there is a detail that moved me. When marlin was attacked by sharks the old man felt that he had no good luck his mood is very disappointed. But when the old man came back and told the boy that he had no good luck the boy firmly told the old man that he would bring him good luck. At that moment the old man regained hope. For the old man he also needs others to give support and comfortheroes also need praise and encouragement.
Never say die ,that's what< The Old Man and the Sea> tells us.
