Harlotte

This wonderful book is written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the founder of American psychoanalytic novels, is also the first writer to write short stories in the history of American literature. He is known as the greatest Romantic novelist in the 19th century.Hawthorne is evaluated as a bystander of life. He has strong interest and insight into people's inner and psychological activities. He advocated people to wash away evil and purify their hearts with good deeds. He lost his father when he was young, and his childhood was unfortunate. He was deeply influenced by Puritanism. All his life experience affected his writing.

At first, I feel a little horrible about this book.It adopts the way of flashback.

Starting with the red word marked "adultery", Prynne and the new-born child were punished in public. Fortunately, they were not executed, but Prynne had to put on the scarlet  “A” on her bosom all the time. Prynne refused to tell the child's father and lived bravely with her daughter,Pearl. In order to retaliate, her husband,  Chillingworth,as a doctor and friend, lurked in Dimmesdale‘s house, the child's biological father, the most admirable priest, which brought great mental pressure to Dimmesdale. Seven years later, under great mental pressure, the dying priest admitted his sin to the public on the scaffold with Prynne and Pearl. Later Chillingworth died, and Prynne and Pearl left the town. Finally, Prynne returned to the town and spent her old age with the scarlet A on her bosom.

There are four main characters in the novel, Hester Prynne, Chillingworth, Dimmesdale and pearl.

I think Chillingworth’s hostility came from love, and he was so stubborn that even lost himself. As to Dimmesdale, I think he was so irresponsible that he didn't admit the crime for the first time and let Prynne bear it alone.Pearl grew up happily under the strong maternal love. She was very innocent and artless, who was not affected by complex society.Prynne is my favorite role.I think she was the bravest woman in the world. She bore people’s condemnation alone, raised Pearl alone, treated others with kindness though there’s nothing in return. She advocated freedom ,pursued love and never afraid of any difficulties.I think she was innocent. She has no love with her husband, and she here alone. She didn’t know whether her husband was alive. It's normal for her to find her true love and started her new life, but it was not be allowed by the people.

In this book, I learned a lot.To begin with, its too tired to live for hatred. It’s bad for others around him, even himself. Then, how great a woman can be!It was she who bore great shame and mental pressure just for love for a long time. She always selflessly devoted herself to helping others.Besides, it told us that perhaps the person we admire most is a sinner.

I like this book because of it’s attractive plots, and excellent characters. This is a book that goes against the traditional religious ideas. It shows the limitations and strong contradictions of the times.
