Reading Report

Generally speaking, through reading it I could obtain the knowledge that organised crowds have always played an important part in the life of people, but this part has never been of such a moment as at present. The substitution of the unconscious action of crowds for the conscious activity of individuals is one of the principal characteristics of the present age. Crowds, doubtless, are always unconscious. Furthermore, this very unconsciousness is perhaps one of the secrets of their strength.

What impressed me most was the view that group effect could lead to the decline of individual intelligence. As the old saying goes, many hands make light work. That does not mean that when gathering, the intelligence of the group tends to be higher than that of each individual in this book. As soon as people arrive in the group, their intelligence, to some extent, has the tendency to decrease sharply. In order to acquire recognition, individuals are willing to abandon their personal views and exchange the intelligence quotient for a sense of belonging that makes you feel more secure. Blind obedience will occupy the commanding height when the intelligence has declined. The cases, such as rushing to buy pork and salt, purchasing a lot of medicine, are the representatives of that phenomenon. In general, in specific time and background, the intelligence of groups will be far lower than that of each person.

I hope that we are not mobs. Don't follow others and be yourself!
