Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland The book is about a long, imaginative
and adventurous dream of a lovely little girl, whose name is Alice. In
Alice’s dream, she followed a human-like rabbit and came into a world
full of queer things. However, She was not afraid at all and instead,
quickly got used to it. She met many “new friends”, Bill the lizard, the
duchess, the Cheshire cat, the hatter, the queen of hearts...... And she
had conversations freely with all these human-like animals and strange
people. She started her own adventure. During Alice’s adventure, we
generally knew about her. She was strong enough for she seldom cried;
She was childish and innocent for she usually talked to herself and
uttered many unexpected ideas; She was adventurous and full of
imagination and curiosity for the whole book was a record of her dream.
There are many psychological descriptions of Alice in the book, so we
know what she is thinking about immediately. But I found it difficult to
follow the mind of a little girl of several years old. In the crazy and
queer world of illusion, it seemed that only Alice was awake. She
constantly explored the world and constantly asked herself “Who am I”.
At the same time, she generally grew and understood more about
herself.Alice embodies the innocence of children. This childlike
innocence is often eroded as one grows up. Therefore, the pure Alice is
very charming and precious to both children and adults. Besides Alice,
my favorite character is the Cheshire cat, which is a short-haired cat
which has an ability to appear and disappear at any time. It always
grins. Even after it has gone, its smile hangs in midair. The cat first
appears in the Duchess’s home, sitting in front of a fireplace. After
Alice left the Duchess’s house, the Cheshire cat showed Alice the way to
the March Hare and the Hatter’s. It helps Alice several time. The most
impressive plot about it is when it appears at the Queen’s croquet
ground. Even the Queen, who often shouts for cutting other’ s heads,
could do nothing about it. From my perspective, the most interesting
part in the story is that Alice come into the fantastic world in the
beginning. Alice eats a cake and drinks a bottle of milk and then she
can change the size of her body, which is impossible in the reality. So
it leaves a deep impression on me. Actually, I think it is too innocent
to read this book from my age. Because the little girl, Alice, is so
naive that I can hardly keep pace with her. I just can’ t understand the
kid’ s mind. However, I have to agree that the beginning of the story is
very attractive. And in this classic book, I have learned many American
culture which I believe, will definitely be beneficial to my English
study. Proverbs, sayings and idioms have an interesting place in Alice
in Wonderland. Alice takes them very literally, as a lot of beginners of
English do when they are learning how to use their expanding
vocabularies, and these literal meanings control and shape to a large
extent how things appear in Wonderland. The March Hare is a good
example. The phrase “mad as a March hare” comes from the behavior of
hares at mating season, in March, but in Wonderland, this creature is
permanently mad.
