All the characters in the book are guilty, but their attitudes towards
sin are different, and the results are also different. For example,
Hester publicly confessed her sin, penance and Atonement, and finally
turned the sign of sin on her chest into a sign of virtue, a saint and
an "angel"; Dimmesdale was hiding his sin, tortured, exhausted
his energy and talent, finally took the courage to repent and confess
his sin, died after moral rehabilitation, and became a martyr:
Chillingworth began to try to expose his sin, but bent on revenge to
harm others and himself, but turned himself into a devil and a real
sinner. People who suffer do not know the intensity of the pain at the
time of suffering, but often feel the pain after the event This scaffold
is a platform of neck and hand flail, on which stands the neck and hand
flail for punishment. The flail cover tightly clamps people's head and
neck, so that people have to lead their neck and tilt their heads for
people to see No other atrocity is more contrary to the humanity of
ordinary people: no matter what mistakes a person makes, no other
atrocity is more sinister and ferocious than not allowing sinners to
hide their faces because of shame It proves that a person can turn
himself into a devil by relying on his own function as long as he is
willing to take the post of the devil for a long time. No one can make
up one face for himself for a long time and show another face to
everyone, because such a person can't figure out which one is the real
face in the end
