Book Review
The author said, "my story has a dual nature. On the surface, it is a simple story that any child can read - full of plot, changes and colors. Then the following is the real story, philosophical, complex and full of meaning."
Buck is a huge dog. He was originally the beloved dog of judge Miller's family. After civilized education, he has been living in a warm valley in the south of the United States. Later, Buck was stolen and sold to Alaska, a remote, cold and rich in gold in the north. He became a sled dog and began a hard life from then on.
Sled dogs work extremely hard and face an extremely bad environment. They not only have to endure hunger and cold, but also often suffer from severe beating with sticks. After being beaten up, buck, who used to be a good man, finally gave up his fantasy and realized that he couldn't compete with a man with a stick. Not only that, in order to survive, it has to fight and kill each other with its own kind.
In the struggle for the position of "dog leader", Buck defeated Spitz, another sled dog, and established his leading position in the dog group through cruel killing. After all this, it has fully understood that under the law of the jungle, "civilization" is useless. In order to survive, it must awaken its potential and bravely deal with the future life.
Alaska's wilderness is open and quiet, covered with snow. It is a symbol of sanctity and majesty. It is inviolable and frightening, but it is treated equally, harsh and fair. The silent northern snow is hard hearted and indifferent to everything, and any life seems extremely small in front of it. During the arduous journey, the exhausted sled dogs died one after another, or died of hunger, cold and disease, or from sticks and fights... Fortunately, Buck met John Thornton when he was dying, survived and established a deep friendship with Thornton.
But Jack London is not a desperate pessimist. His works are full of romantic heroism complex: worship life, pursue the true form of life, and pursue the liberation and freedom of body and soul. Life releases powerful primitive power, has a natural pulse of joy and struggle, and bursts out with the same passion and freedom as Dionysus, the God of wine in Greek mythology. It was an era of advocating struggle, because only unyielding struggle can make people get out of the desperate situation and overcome death. Buck is such a representative existence. It struggled to survive in the harsh environment of the snow in the north, won the leading position from the killing of dogs, and killed the cruel Indians. It witnessed death, also experienced the struggle with death, and finally followed the call of the wild to return to the wilderness.
Wildness means cruelty and purity. Like Buck's love for his master, it is not mixed with any impurities.
We have witnessed too many deaths, but with death comes not tears, begging and despair, but dignity and dignity, calm and sober understanding. In fact, the fear of death and the struggle against death are also the love of life from a certain point of view. Only when we realize that an individual's life will be ended by death one day, can we sprout a strong and sober consciousness of death, have an appropriate attitude towards death, cherish and love every moment in the process of life, respect the lives of ourselves and others, and enthusiastically pursue the freedom and truth of life.
