spirit of heroes
张丹莹
On a cold Christmas night, Malmut Kidd and his friends were drinking in
the hotel and telling stories of their adventures in the north. At that
time, the arrival of a stranger named Jack Westendall attracted
everyone's attention. He said he was chasing a few people who stole his
sled for 12 hours in the snow. So Kidd was generous to provid him with
food and room for break. Four hours later, Kidd woke Westondale and told
him to continue on his way. Fifteen minutes later, a mounted police
officer arrived at the hotel and asked where Westondale was, saying he
had robbed Dawson's Casino for $40,000. Kidd suggested that the people
at the hotel remained silent and did not provide any clues or helps to
the mounted police. After the mounted police left, people were puzzled
that Kidd's approach to helping a robber escape clearly violated moral
principles. But in fact, Kidd had previously heard the story of
Westendell from a friend. In order to take care of a friend who was
suffering from scurvy, he entrusted all 40,000 of his savings to his
partner Castel to buy enough stock to make him change into a
millionaire. But that guy took the money to the casino and lost
everything, and was found dead in the snow the next day. Westendale had
planned to go back with the money to see his wife and children, but
because of someone else's fault, he had nothing left in an instant.
Being witty and chivalrous, Kidd was a veteran gold digger with rich
life experience and a high prestige in northern Xinjiang. In Kidd's
view, Westendall's actions were in line with the norms of justice and
conduct in Northern Xinjiang, so he must be respectable and trustworthy.
Kidd's judgment just showed the author's own view: in the harsh
environment of northern Xinjiang, the relationship between man and
nature is ruthless and difficult. And in such a harsh environment, some
excellent qualities of human beings such as loyalty, perseverance,
courage, integrity are especially valuable. Only men who are truly
persevering and capable can win the right to live, and win the respect
of others by virtue of your courage, intelligence, integrity and
selflessness. This is a simple and solid truth.Beijiang cannot tolerate
opportunism. To survive and become a hero, everything has to rely on
real hard work and excellent moral quality. Westendall and Kidd are the
heroes that the author celebrates.
