MY VIEW OF TESS
林泽锋
Tess is a woman with a strong sense of self-esteem and
responsibility. This self-esteem makes her reluctant to cling to the
"rich relatives of the D 'Urbervilles". However, because of
her mistake, the only cow in the family died and the family's economy
became unsustainable. Her sense of responsibility made her promise
to work as a servant at Alec's house, which also contributed to Alec's
aggression against her. It is also because of her self-esteem that
Tess didn't sell Angel's wedding jewelry to her at the most
poverty-stricken moment, nor did she go to Angel's parents' home for
help. Her sense of responsibility made her commit herself to Alec when
her family really couldn't live any longer. This time, unlike the
last time, Alec lied to her that Angel would never come back, and she
gave up. When she knew that Angel had come back, she realized that Alec
had lied to herself, and that Tess had killed Alec because of her
long-term persistence. All this was so logical. Tess is also a very
simple person. This simplicity makes her pursue true love, and even if
she loses her virginity, she is not with Alec. This simplicity makes it
impossible for her to hide her secret from Angel. But at the same time,
Tess also has a little vanity, because vanity gets on Alec's horse under
the dispute of several country women. Because of vanity, she fought for
Angel with several other women who like Angel on the farm. It was meant
that she didn't intend to get married again. In a word, the
characterization in this book is three-dimensional. Tess's words and
deeds all reflect her personality, which makes her tragedy seem so inevitable.
