My comment

潘小舟

This is a piece of psychological description of Mr. Lorry, interspersed between the conversation between Mr. Lorry and Miss Pross, in which Miss Pross's tone was not so good. But Mr. Lorry still thought highly of her, though he had known Miss Pross to be very jealous. Mr. Lorry thought Miss Pross, as the text suggests, to be a woman of no selfishness beneath the service of her eccentricity. As she said herself, she would have cared for poor little Lucie at the age of ten for nothing if she could have afforded to keep either herself or her without pay. She was not beautiful then, and perhaps never had been. Enough fortune was not given to her to gain achievements, and light had never shone upon her dark life. However, she always acted like a loyal slave, for pure love and worship, willing to serve Lucie, the young, beautiful girl, the girl she called proudly Lady-bird. She loved Lucie and never shied away from praising her perfection. When Lucy was happy, she was happy. When Lucy got angry, she then got angry. And when Lucy worried, she worried. She was an unlucky woman who was used and abandoned by her brother without ever cursing him. I think maybe deep down she was sad too, so she wanted to make Lucie fulfilled. She wanted to realize herself in Lucie, and Lucie had become the most important part of her life.
