一只小河豚
At ten o'clock one evening, the hotel waiter woke up carton as
instructed. Carton went to Stryver's office. After Carton helped Stryver
sort out the materials, the two talked while drinking. They recalled the
past. Stryver thought that Carton's way of life was a bad way, and
Carton express his own feelings. And This passage comes from this
conversation. In fact, this passage is not complete. The complete
passage is “Before Shrewsbury, and at Shrewsbury, and ever since
Shrewsbury, you have fallen into your rank, and I have fallen into mine.
Even when we were fellow students in the Student-Quarter of Paris,
picking up French, and French law, and other French crumbs that we
didn't get much good of, you were always somewhere, and I was
always--nowhere”. Caton is striver's assistant. He helps striver
organize manuscripts behind the scenes, and striver enjoys praise and
success. People call Stryver a lion and Carton a jackal. Stryver thinks
carton has no goal and can't cheer up. Carton didn't want to hear
Stryver preach. He felt that Stryver was always in front of him. He
thought that Stryver were always driving and riving and shouldering and
pressing, to that restless degree that he had no chance for my life but
in rust and repose. From this passage, we can see that carton has fallen
into his current situation. He is stubborn. He stubbornly believes that
he should fall behind, stubbornly makes himself fall in tears,
stubbornly goes his own way, and doesn't listen to other people's
preaching and exhortation. He knew he was falling, but he couldn't help
doing it. Many people have this mentality. They choose to give up after
falling behind many times, are content with the status quo, are
unwilling to make changes, lack fighting spirit, lose hope, and
sometimes even blame others for the failure. They are too stubborn and
self righteous. We often fall into such a dead circle in our life. But
we should listen to others and make changes instead of sinking deeper
and deeper into the mire.
