On a moonlit night in December 1757, when Manette, a young doctor living in Paris, was walking, he was suddenly forced by the brothers of the Marquis of Evremonde to make a home visit. In the Marquis's house, he witnessed the tragic death of a crazy and gorgeous peasant woman and a young man who was wounded by a sword. It turned out that the two brothers were tenants of the Marquis's family, and the Marquis brothers killed their whole family for a moment of pleasure. He refused the Marquis brother's heavy bribe and wrote to the court to report. But the letter fell into the hands of the accused, and the doctor was imprisoned in the Bastille, where he was never heard from again.

This is the beginning of the story and the beginning of the nightmare of the hero Manette. Because of her power, she was forced to divorce her wife and children, imprisoned and abused. The reason for these consequences is that he exposed the crimes of the powerful. This can not help but make people sigh.

After 18 years, Dr. Manette was released, but he had completely lost his memory of the things around him. The insane old man with white hair was taken in by a wine dealer and his old servant Defarge in the Saint Antoine District of Paris. At this time, my daughter Lucy had grown up and took him to live in England. On the journey, they met Charles Darnay, a young French, and were taken care of by him. Darnay was the nephew of the marquis. He hated the sins of his family, resolutely gave up the inheritance of property and the aristocratic surname, moved to London, and became a French teacher.

Not long after arriving in Britain, Darnay was entangled in an unnecessary lawsuit, and the lawyer he hired helped him win the lawsuit. The lawyer's assistant, Sidney Caton, looks very much like Darnay. Caton and Darnay soon became regular visitors to the doctor's house. Through Lucy's careful care and meticulous care, the doctor has almost completely cast off the shadow of his long prison life. Only at the moment when he was very excited, people could detect some traces of his past insanity. Lucy's lovely appearance made the two young people fall in love, but Lucy only admired Darnay. Manette decided to bury the past for her daughter's happiness and gladly agreed to their marriage.

Dr Manette was framed by the Marquis and imprisoned in the Bastille for 17 years. In these 17 years, his wife died of depression, and the remaining young daughter was sent to London by friends. The long-term imprisonment kept his spirit on the verge of collapse. Even after he was released from prison, he still lived in the dark attic. When his daughter first met Manette, Manette only knew that she was a criminal at No. 105, North Building of Bastille prison. The broken family and soul were all created by the marquis. However, Manette's daughter fell in love with the Marquis's son, and they would love each other for life. Although the Marquis has long passed away, and although the Marquis's son is an honest and kind man, the descendants of the enemy are close at hand, and Manette cannot be indifferent. For Manette, choosing forgiveness or revenge will lead him to a completely different path. For his daughter's happiness, he chose to give up the past, because in the face of father's love, the suffering is really not worth mentioning.

However, not everyone is Manette. Madame Defarge's family feud was not avenged until the moment when the Marquis's son was sentenced to death, her hatred flared up. She wanted to kill the Marquis's son's family, so as to reduce her hatred. But in the end, the hatred pushed Mrs. Defarge into the dark abyss. Through the ending of a tale of two cities, Dickens wants to tell us that love can overcome hatred, and forgiveness is the right choice.

The storm of the French Revolution in 1789 finally hit. The people of Paris captured the Bastille and sent the nobles to the guillotine one by one. In order to rescue the housekeeper Gabriel, Darnay, who was far away in London, ventured to return home and was arrested and imprisoned as soon as he arrived in Paris. The news soon spread to London. The doctor took his daughter Lucy to Paris because he believed that his long-term imprisonment in the Bastille prison would win the sympathy of the French people and help rescue his son-in-law. With the passage of time, the doctor finally got the promise that Darnay would not be executed.

In the end, the situation was reversed. A document was found in the ruins of the Bastille prison, which included Dr. Manette's account of how he was abducted and imprisoned and his serious curse on the Marquis family and its descendants. "The last person to accuse the heaven and the earth of the family of evermont." The court sentenced Darnay to be executed within 24 hours.

In the French Revolution described by Dickens, the smell of blood is everywhere. Every street seems to have become a sharp knife, and everyone has become a tool of killing. Every glass of wine contains the smell of blood. Even young and ignorant children take hatred for granted. Although the French Revolution described by Dickens deviates from the real history, the blindness, ignorance and barbarism of the people towards the revolution is a place that everyone should seriously reflect on. What is the purpose of the revolution, for the progress of history, for the rights of the people, and for freedom? However, in the name of freedom, countless heads would roll down on the guillotine in every revolution.

At this time, carton then came to Paris. He once promised Lucy to sacrifice herself to save the people she loved. Along the streets of Paris, six prisoner carts carrying the dead were carrying the sacrifices of the day to the guillotine. Carton was sitting in the third van, his hands tied. When he heard a cry against him in the street, he just smiled quietly and waved his hair more loosely to cover his face. On the guillotine, Caton died calmly for love.

In a tale of two cities, Dickens portrayed Mr. carton as a prodigal son who abandoned himself and allowed himself to degenerate. Only in the face of love can he show the nobility of human nature, and finally sacrifice his life for the happiness of his loved ones.

Carton has no nostalgia for himself or life, no love for life, and no sense of self love. When he fell in love with Lucy, it was like he was floating in the vast sea, holding a straw in his hand. But when this straw is in danger, carton will resolutely stand up to protect it. Because for him, there is no nostalgia for the degenerate life, and only the love for Lucy is the hope for him to persist in living. Even for Lucy, or for the people Lucy loves, carton can give his life at any time.

"A tale of two cities" is a story between London and Paris, but there is no obvious geographical boundary. It seems that all these things happen in the same city. London is Paris, Paris is London. There are no two cities at all. There are love and forgiveness in human nature, hatred and revenge in human nature. Let this soul stirring novel lead us back to that cloudy Paris, and then into the foggy London to immerse ourselves in that distant era. That was the best time and the worst time. In that era, may we tear a gap in the curtain of history, and let the glory of humanity shine through the curtain to illuminate the way forward at this moment.
