双城记读后感
桃源
A tale of two cities is a long historical novel written by Charles
Dickens, an English writer, with the French Revolution as the
background. The book tells about the corruption of the French
aristocracy and the oppression of the people. The people's
dissatisfaction with the aristocracy is growing day by day, and the
social contradictions are intensifying, which eventually led to the
outbreak of the revolution. However, in that dark period, there was
still the brilliance of humanity, which expressed the author's praise
and pursuit of humanism. In the story, Manette, a young Parisian doctor,
is suddenly forced to make a visit by the brothers of the Marquis of
Evremonde while walking. In the service of the Marquis, he witnessed the
tragic death of a pair of brothers and sisters, and learned that the
Marquis brothers killed their whole family for a moment of pleasure. He
refused the bribes of the Marquis brothers and wrote a letter to report
their crimes. However, the letter of accusation fell into the hands of
the defendant. Dr Manette was also put in the Bastille prison and lived
a dark life of isolation for 18 years. Manette's wife was very
miserable. She decided not to let her youngest daughter Lucie know her
father's misfortune, and planned to raise her in this way.
Unfortunately, Manette's wife died two years later. Before she died, she
entrusted her daughter to Lori, a banker. So Lucie was taken to London
and brought up under the care of the kind-hearted maid Poulos. Eighteen
years later, Dr. Manette was released, but he had lost his memory of the
things around him and had mental problems. Later, his daughter Lucie
took him to England and took good care of him. On the way, they also met
Charles Darney, a young French man. Although he was the nephew of the
Marquis of Evremonde, he hated the sins of the family, gave up the
inheritance of the property and the aristocratic name, and moved to
London to become a French teacher. After arriving in London, Darney was
entangled in a lawsuit, and his lawyer helped him win the lawsuit.
Sidney carton, the lawyer's assistant, looks very similar to Darney.
Both of them love Lucie, but Lucie only admires Darney. After Lucie's
careful care, Manette gradually got rid of the shadow of prison life.
Later, the class contradiction between the nobles and the ordinary
people became increasingly fierce, and finally, the French Revolution
broke out in 1789. The people of Paris captured the Bastille and sent
the nobles to the guillotine. In order to rescue the housekeeper, Darney
returned to Paris from London, but was arrested and imprisoned. Dr
Manette and Lucie hurried to Paris. They made continuous efforts to save
Darney, and finally got the promise that Darney would not be executed.
However, people found in the Bastille prison that Dr Manette had written
about how he was abducted and imprisoned, and the curse on the Marquis
family and its descendants, so the court sentenced Darney to death. At
this time, carton also came to Paris. He took advantage of his
resemblance to Darney to transport the anesthetized Darney out of his
cell, while he waited for the death penalty in his cell, because he had
promised Lucie that he would sacrifice himself to save the people she
loved. Finally, after receiving Darney, Dr. Manette and Lucie escaped
from France smoothly, while carton listened to people's voices against
the nobles in the prison car, smiled, and then died calmly. This novel
is full of Dickens' call for humanism, love and peace. Dr Manette is
kind-hearted and honest. Even in the face of nobles and bribes, he still
chooses to report crimes. Even though he had suffered 18 years in the
Bastille prison and hated the harshness and cruelty of the nobles, he
still chose to repay good for evil for the happiness of his daughter
Lucie, and reconciled with Darney, the descendant of the Marquis of
Evremonde, and reconciled with his own heart. He completed the love
between the two young people, and chose to go to Paris to rescue Darney
when he was in danger. Darney was also a man full of humanitarian
spirit. Although he was a descendant of the aristocracy, he did not
brutally oppress and exploit ordinary people. On the contrary, he hated
the crimes of his family and the oppression of the aristocracy. He was
very ashamed of the innocent people who were hurt by his family. Later,
he resolutely gave up the inheritance right of property and the
aristocratic name, and gained the tolerance and affirmation of Dr.
Manette with his sincerity and kindness. After the outbreak of the great
revolution, in order to rescue his housekeeper, he did not hesitate to
return to Paris at the risk of being caught. Even if he was caught in
prison because of his family background, he was most worried about the
safety of his wife, daughter and father-in-law. Carton was moved by
Lucie's brilliance, saw the hope of life again, and radiated his
humanitarian light. Because of Lucie's appearance, he picked up the hope
of life from a decadent, ruthless and cowardly person who hates the
world. His love for Lucie is selfless. He loved Lucie deeply but didn't
ask for return. He thought he was not qualified to love her, and he
would die soon because of lung disease. So he buried his love for Lucie
in the bottom of his heart, and sincerely wished Lucie and Darney that
they could harvest real love, while he was willing to sacrifice himself
at any time for Lucie and the people he loved. At the end of the story,
he did that. He sacrificed himself, saved Darney, and fulfilled the love
of his beloved. His human brilliance adds a romantic color to the novel,
and also points out a direction for many readers to pursue love. In this
novel, Madame Defarge is portrayed by the author as a terrible, cruel
and ruthless person. She is a woman of the lower class with a tragic
fate. Her relatives have been persecuted and killed by the Marquis of
Evremonde one after another. She also grows up gradually, and has been
patient, waiting for the opportunity of revenge. After the revolution
broke out, she became a fearsome leader. The author focused on depicting
her cruelty and her abnormal psychology of harming the innocent for
revenge, expressed the author's humanism against violence, and advocated
that class conflicts should be resolved through love. In addition to
expressing his admiration for humanitarianism, Dickens also wanted to
warn the world through the connection between Paris and London. The tale
of two cities was created in the 1950s, when the British capitalist
economy was developing rapidly. The rapid development of the capitalist
economy and the increasing poverty of the working people brought all
kinds of evils, which led to the intensification of class contradictions
and made Britain on the verge of a great revolution. Dickens used Paris
during the French Revolution to hint at London at that time, and gave
warning to the British society at that time. If he only pursued economic
development and ignored the living conditions of the lower class people,
ignoring the increasing intensification of class contradictions, the
violent revolution might eventually break out in Britain.
