A Tale of Two Cities
Charles Dickens, the life in the nineteenth century by the semi-feudal society to industrial capitalism society transition contact British writer, produced oliver twist, David Copperfield, a tale of two cities, such as "great expectations" a number of great works, of English literature and world culture had a profound impact. His works widely and deeply describes every aspect of British social life at that time, many representative vividly depict the characters, among them there are staunch revolutionary, there are ugly soul feudal lords, thoughtful, to strive for freedom and love of the noble descent, there are also many living in the bottom, a variety of the "little guy". He exposed and criticized all kinds of ugly social phenomena from the perspective of humanitarianism and sympathized with and supported the sufferings of the bottom class laboring people and their resistance. But at the same time, he did not approve of class struggle by violent means, but advocated tolerance, forgiveness and class reconciliation centered on "love". This unique concept of writing has been praised by many writers and revolutionaries. The former Soviet writer Gorky is not only a writer who reflects reality, but also tries his best to play a role in reality.
During the summer vacation, I read the famous novel written by Dickens -- A Tale of Two Cities. Set against the background of the French Revolution, the novel depicts a violent struggle between classes and social change. At that time, Dickens lived in England, which was in the period of rapid development of capitalist economy, capital accumulation brought various crimes, and the working people were exploited and increasingly poor. The lower masses were full of extreme resentment and dissatisfaction, while the ruling class was arrogant and immoral. The sharp social contradictions almost tore the whole society apart, and the oppressive atmosphere seemed ready to explode into revolution and riot. The parallels with pre-revolutionary France worried Dickens. In order to alert the British society, he wrote this work based on the twin cities of Paris and London.
The story gets off to a depressing start, with foggy, muddy, dark roads and brief, sharp conversations between the characters tugging at the reader and setting the tone. The society is full of aristocrats, looking covetously at every pedestrian, passers-by in a hurry, eyes evaded, as if stealing wheat mice. Under the leadership of the Defayers, the underclass gathered in the wine hall, where the revolutionaries were poised to take off, dealing with the watchdogs and passing on information. After the complex network of relationships is gradually revealed to the reader, one of the important characters of the story, Dr. Mannetta, appears in the grim tower, and the first part of the story ends with the doctor being saved.
The second and third parts are the development and climax of the story. The Mannetta family, Darnay, Carton and other important people appear one by one. At the same time, the tsunami of revolution also begins to gather strength. Reunited with her daughter Lucy, Dr. Mannetta spent some quiet and happy hours on the corner of Soho Square. However, fate makes a person, the Darne that loves with Lucy is actually the descendant of the aristocrat that framed the doctor and put in prison in those days, but the Darne heart is kind, disdain and ugly family together, one heart wants to achieve his career, give Lucy happiness, finally obtained the doctor's approval. And with the advent of the revolution, faraway doctors and others eventually do not escape the fate of being involved. The revolution swept through France, the society into a frenzy, in order to rescue the housekeeper, Darnay ventured back to the country but found himself in prison. In order to rescue his daughter's lover, Dr. Mannetta, who is quite famous among the revolutionary masses, resolutely went to Paris, but the disclosure of the crimes of the Marquis made the rescue operation unsuccessful. Finally, in the name of fulfilling his promise, Carton, who resembled Darnay, died in Darnay's place. The story also ends in Catton's prophecy.
The characters in the story all have distinct personality traits. Kind and beautiful Lucy, spoony fearless Card, loyal Laurie...... Have left a deep impression on the reader's mind. Among them, in order to promise and love the resolute death of Carton to my heart brought a huge shock. His talent, his infatuation and his tragic fate are moving people. Through the doctor's family, Dickens portrays the ideal "love" in his mind, which is also a hint to the reality -- violence can only bring pain, and only love can solve the problem.
A Tale of Two Cities is a classic work of realistic literature, which vividly depicts the conflicts between classes and the pain caused by violent revolution. The characters in the story are vivid and profound, the plot twists and turns, gripping, full of mysterious and romantic color, let the reader can't help but fall in love with it. The comparison is just right, but it skillfully combines the luxury of the nobility with the hardship and anger of the common people, the cruelty and madness of the violent revolution and the goodness and glory of the deep human nature. This novel is like a delicacy, leaving diners with endless aftertaste.
