Symbolism

Sea. Santiago considers the sea as a gentle woman. The sea is calm but has infinite power. She is so unfathomable . The sea symbolizes the a real tough guy is one who is modest outside but has great perseverance and fighting spirit inside.

Lion. The novel ends with the old man dreaming of a lion. The lion has his own confidence and majesty, which is awesome. The lion symbolizes the man's persevering inner world that he want to prove himself by sailing. It also hints that the old man will still choose to sail again.

Contrast

Greedy sharks and fierce marlin contrasts the old man's courage and fearlessness. There is also pace contrast. The novel begins with a loe pace. When the old fight against marlin and shark, the novel pace comes to quick and intense.
