The Old Man and the Sea written by an American writer named Ernest Hemingway is one of his most immortal works. The book has been translated into tens of languages and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. It is about an old fisher called Santiago, who didn’t catch a fish for 84 days. On the 85thday, he decided to sail for a long way to go fishing. After waiting for a long time, a giant marlin swallowed his bait. Despite of his weakness, he fought against the fish successfully and killed it. On his way back home, he tried his best to protect his achievement, but unluckily he failed. In the end, what he only gained was nothing except for the skeleton of his fish. That means his hardwork went for nothing.
The book written by Hemingway tells us a story that an old man whose name is Santiago went out to do some fishing on the sea on his own, but down on his luck, he hadn’t caught any fish for 84 days. The next day he caught a huge marlin which is bigger than his boat and took a formidable battle with it. He beat it at the end. When he was on the way home, the smells of blood of the marlin drew a lot of sharks’ attention and they fought for it. In order to protect the marlin and him the old man tried his best to fight with them. After a cruel fight, he won it and came back home tiredly. Although he only got a skeleton of the giant marlin at last, he is also a great hero in many people’s hearts.
In the article, the old man is a great man. Although he failed for many times in his life, he never gave up. He is a steel-willing man who insisted his dream and work hard. You can destroy him, but you can’t beat him. Whatever he faced to, he would never yield to the difficulty, which shows a strong spirit.
In our lives, I think we should learn something from the old man which will make us have a more valuable life. Whenever and wherever we meet , we should never give up and try our best to overcome it. We should always keep in our dream and make it come true. Every one has his backbone which can’t be bended by anyone, which is very important for everyone in his whole life. If we meet difficulty in our lives, we should face it bravely and work out some way to solve the problem whatever would happen at last. We can be destroyed, but we can’t be beat by anything or anyone.
If you failed for many times in your life, you wouldn’t surrender because if you try to do it, you may succeed in your life, but if you do not do it, you would not be succeed forever. Everyone has his advantages and disadvantages in his life, but we should face to our disadvantages, and we must be confident, which would also make us be confident of our life. We should have faith in what we do in our life, we will have a more beautiful life in the future and our dream will come true. We should pay more attention to what we do during our life rather than what we will get at the end because I think it is more important than any thing you get finally. If you enjoy your life not something you get, you will have a meaningful life and a noble spirit. It will hurt you when you pay more attention to what you get in the future. It will also make you do something wrong which is bad for other people, our society and our country.
I’m impressed by the sentence which is “We can be destroyed, but we can’t be beat.” I think everyone should do it no matter what happen in our life. This book makes me know something I didn’t know in the past. The book and the old man have a great influence on my life. I love that book.The book is about an adventure of a tough man. After reading it, I am deeply moved and impressed by his struggle with the fish and his strong willpower. Just as Hemingway put it in the book, a man can be destroyed but not defeated. Whatever we are faced with, we should never yield to the difficulties and be ready to overcome the hardship with determination and persistence.
Why the writer wrote this story? Actually, the story was based on real events. It was about an old Cuban fisher who is a friend of Hemingway. In 1930, his ship sank and the friendly fisher saved hislife. From then on, they kept on getting in touch. In 1936, the fisher caught ahuge fish, but it was eaten up by groups of shark. The story gave him inspiration and the book was finally published in 1952. We can also see that the old man’s characteristics has much common with the writer himself. Hemingway is a “toughguy”, and so do Santiago. He want to write the story in order to show the personalities of people like him. What does this story tell us?Well it tells us about life philosophy. Although the man didn’t get anything at last, on the other hand he could also be the winner,.He defended the dignity of humansoul, and showed how a man could fight against the nature.
The Old Man and the Sea is not just a great story, but also a masterpiece that makes us thinking about human nature. I believe this is thereason why the story is being loved ,and why it has so much impact on thedevelopment of modern literature.
