Winniefox

The Scarlet Letter, a novel by Hawthorne, an American romantic writer in the 19th century, is much shorter than those big novels, but it also has the impressive effect of big novels, as well as superb artistic attements, and can be regarded as a model of classic works.

This is a novel about the soul, everyone has his own soul, but some people maintain the soul, some people damage the soul, some people lost the soul, so the world is full of a variety of life and people's stories.

Hester Prynne, the hero, wore on her bosom the scarlet letter of soul shame -- A large A. The salvation of the soul under the tormenting moral lash. But she was an unyielding woman who defied fate throughout her life. She doubts the rationality of this secular morality, but at the same time is paradoxically aware of the evil of the soul, the complexity of human nature. This kind of religious emotional entanglement is difficult for people without religious belief to understand, and I am such an incomprehensible person. Religion has been a part of Western life. It must be very painful to leave it. But I have no religious experience, so I can't understand the psychology of the protagonist. This is also my obstacle to understanding the novel, but I can't overcome it.

The novel also expresses the idea that people need to struggle to get freedom and liberation, which is embodied in Hester Prynne, who has been resisting the tragic fate, her heart is full of longing for a better life, full of selfless love, which is a valuable spirit. Because of this, she became a noble person, was respected by the people, so as to wash away the shame of the body, and the scarlet letter has become a noble symbol. Here the writer is challenging conventional morality by dissecting secular morality and forcing the reader to re-examine the rationality of our moral standards and their most insidious aspects. This is the most famous place and immortal reason.

Another hero of the novel, Reverend Dimmesdale, was the most bitter person who suffered from religious persecution. In order to save his soul, this poor man suffered spiritual torture and branded a scarlet letter on his chest with a hot iron to condemn himself. Finally, he died miserably under unbearable spiritual pressure and became a victim of the hypocrisy and morality of human society. The history of human beings is very short, but the history of persecuting people under various names is very long. Western religion is just like this. It seems bright and gives people hope, but in fact it is a tool to destroy people. Dimmesdale also shows people's weakness in the face of strong oppression, which is one of the root causes of the tragedy.

Their daughter, little Pearl, showed the nature of children, which is the most beautiful thing in the world. Human nature should be so, this is the true nature of human beings. Yet with the dogma, the precepts that we have created, we have made ourselves spiritual slaves, lost our human nature, and thus become extremely painful and helpless to live in this world that should be full of happiness. This is something we must reflect on, otherwise human suffering will continue.

Chillingworth, the villain, is a soulless creature, who should have been tolerant of everything, because he had reason to be, but he was not. Not only had he been the man responsible for Hester Prynne's miserable fate, but instead of reflecting on his own wrongs and forgiving others, he was filled with hatred, poisoned his own soul, and became a most foul and despicable man. This is a man whose soul is possessed by the devil. If a man's heart only hate, then his soul must be full of evil.

Hawthorne uses his exquisite artistic techniques to analyze the inner world of people and show the secret of the inner world of people, which is the eternal charm of the novel.

Reading "The Scarlet Letter" let me feel the calm after the depression, after the pain of happiness.
