The First Mary Sue
When I was in junior high school, I read Jane Eyre for the first time, I just thought she should be the top of the women.
Later I just read it once again several weeks ago out of the reason of courses requirement, my mind changed.
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes. Most of the time, Jane just leaving a fictional explorer and adventuress, compared the current top of women I thought Scarlett in the book Gone With the Wind. I am confused that even the former one was first published in 19th century, Victorian Age, when the realism reigned over the western. Under such circumstance, Charlotte Brontë pictured a flat character which is unpopular at that time.
Moreover, before I was informed that Jane was gifted 5000 pounds and she backed to Thornfield Hall in which Rochester lived in. I just feeling disgusting.
Why did Jane Eyre choose to leave Rochester? The superficial reason was that Jane Eyre found Rochester already had a wife and did not want Rochester to betray his loyalty to his wife. The true reason was that Jane Eyre regarded herself humble and poor, who didn’t flatter Rochester, a big landlord and president. So, she chose to leave.
Why did she go back to Rochester? She inherited a fortune, social capital, 5000 pounds from her deceased uncle. Consequently, with this fortune, in the financial social status, she thought she was the type of the woman that flattered Rochester and she backed the Thornfield Hall. Just at this time, Rochester was disabled out of the reason that his wife fired the entire Thornfield Hall. Suffering from this unpredictable change, the loss of Rochester and the enrichment of Jane lead these two finally being relatively equal, so Jane Eyre and Rochester be together.
Jane’s confidence was on the basis of what she hated and whined all the time, and that was the money. The topics of Female independence and the Female Freedom and Dignity in Jane Eyre seem somewhat false, just because in the capitalist society, to some extent, female independence is actually embedded in the premise of economic independence. Anyway, I just thought this woman would have something special, now if this book were not the one that have a go for something relating the Literature Thesis of Feminism, I don’t think this book flatters its position in literature currently.
But I still have something to say.
This work was an immediate success.
A large part of the value of Jane Eyre lies in its groundbreaking significance for the Mary Sue. Many of this type of stories we read on the Internet today you can resonate with it in Jane Eyre.
Jane Eyre’s appeal was partly due to the fact that it was written in the first person and often addressed the reader, creating great immediacy.
In addition, Jane is an unconventional heroine, an independent and self-reliant woman who overcomes both adversity and societal norms. The novel also notably blended diverse genres. Jane’s choice between sexual need and ethical duty belongs very firmly to the mode of moral realism. However, her close escape from a bigamous marriage and the fiery death of Bertha are part of the Gothic tradition.
