After reading this book, I admire the protagonist Santiago very much.
After three days of exhausting fighting at sea, old Santiago finally
hauled to the shore a huge rack of fish bones. In fact, the old man was
the winner. And it would be impossible to believe that this frail old
man could conquer the mighty sea. In Hemingway's view, life is an
unwinnable war. But the old man did not stop action, which is a kind of
pursuit in the face of death and failure. Therefore, we can see the
dignity and great spiritual power in Santiago, and bring strong
aesthetic effect to the readers: make us deeply realize the
contradiction between the limitation of human life and the infinity of
human pursuit. Who doesn't suffer some setbacks and failures along the
way?Santiago gives us the inspiration is: the value and meaning of life
lies in the action itself. Therefore, Hemingway found the soul for his
beloved tough guys, which is the eternal value of mankind -- the solemn
and noble struggle against fate. In Santiago, there is a deep and strong
tragic consciousness of life. Although Hemingway's characters are
tragic, they all accept failure calmly and face death bravely. These
"tough men" reflect Hemingway's philosophy of life and moral,
that is, human beings never surrender to fate and are always positive
and optimistic towards life.
