My thoughts about the Garden Party
顾梓柒
The main content of the novel “the Garden Party” is about the tragic
death of a poor neighbor of Mrs. Xie due to a accidental accident, and
the family of the deceased is weeping and grieving, while she plays
music in the garden and entertains the guests. The short story "the
Garden Party" is like a photograph that captures a moment in the
lives of people and seals that memory forever. There they are, or
smiling, or frowning, or sad, or happy, or serious, or surprised...
Behind this smile and frown are all the experiences of life, where are
fears and joys, but also hopes and dreams. These sharp and elegant
stories show us ordinary life, and the trivial and insignificant little
things that make up the life of ordinary people. These include a garden
party and a death, a desperate search for a job, a lonely train journey
across Europe, and an encounter with a woman who hides a dangerous
secret. What’s more, there are also unsympathetic children, how young
girls feel when they go to dance for the first time, the thoughts of a
hostess's personal maid, and the story of a woman on a remote farm in
New Zealand. The theme of the novel is the Garden Party, however, the
Garden Party is not described throughout the story. Regarding the
process of the garden party, the novel does not describe it, but only a
passing mention, and the author more writes about the contrast between
the two families by preparing for the garden party. The character of
Laura is a very simple character, and many of her ideas are similar to
what we think today: always looking at the world with a very simple,
very compassionate concept. Nevertheless, the rest of the family is much
more mature than her, they are used to the world, to their own lives.
For example, after the garden party, there was a lot of food left, and
at this time the rest of the family thought that in order to show the
family's sympathy for others, these leftovers should be sent to the poor
house as a sign of condolences. However, at this time, Laura raised
another objection that she thought it would be disrespectful to send
these scraps to the homes of the poor. But the rest of the family
disagreed. In the end, Laura went anyway. In the poor house, she
witnessed the poverty of the family and felt their sorrow. Therefore, at
the end, when Laura's brother came to pick up Laura, Laura suddenly had
some feelings about life which she couldn't express it clearly, but her
brother understood, and the novel came to an abrupt end. All in all, if
I were to answer the question that the author leaves the reader at the
end of the novel: what exactly is Laura trying to say, and what does she
know about life? To this question, I hold the view that my answer should
be: life is like this, everyone's life is hugely different; life is like
this, full of unexpected sadness.
