Review

         After War World II, Ernest Miller Hemingway moved to Cuba where he met a fisherman.Then, he wrote a book named The Old Man and the Sea. Since he was accessible to be familiar with the fisherman, he wrote such a great book even earned the Nobel Prize in Literature. In this book, there are only two main characters, which is quite different from other works. Like Jane Eyre, there are several figures in this book. But in The Old Man and the Sea, there is only an old man and a boy. I like both of them. Though the old man never has his own name, he is the most impressive figure in my mind. The old man went fishing everyday, but he never successfully caught a fish. In this book, there are varietis of phychological activity description. Through this writing, I am surprised to find that he is a strong-minded person. Every time he failed to catch a fish, he would pick up his heart. And every time he went out to fish, he would make his effort as if he were going to catch a big fish even though he failed every time. And the young boy, he not only had learnt the skills on fishing, but also had learnt to be a responsible man. Every morning, he went out to catch fish and sometimes he would help to prepare the breakfast for the old man. The most impressive plot in my mind is that he would not complain even though he fell asleep when walking, instead of asking himself why he chose to suffer from this. 

       Through this book, I have learnt that to be a successful person is never to give up. How could a person who always give up and stop be successful? If the old man has given up in the way, he would not catch such a big fish. If the old man was shocked by the big fish and stop to catch it, then he would not get this big fish. It enlightens me that what a failure is. In fact, failure is someone consistantly giving up. So how could a person always gives up be successful in a field? Success only belongs to those who are diligent and persistent. In ancient China, a poor man who only had spare time at night, loves reading so much that he chose to collect enough glowworms to make a light. No matter how hard it is, he never gave up to learn. Finally, he was known for his knowlegeable and had the opportunity to be an official. Therefore, to be a successful person, diligent and persistent is the basic characteristic for us. 

      From this book, I have learnt that the old man is a positive man. In fact, our life is just like this old man,quite ordinary. Eighty-four days, the old man had never caught any fish. But in eighty-five day, the old man had caught a big fish and the fish was so big that he strained every nerve to catch it. Our life will be full of failure. But be optimistic, all of the failure is to help you become a successful person. The sea can sometimes be a tender man, but sometimes a monster. A person differs from the sea because he has his own will to fight against the difficulties. In this book, the old man was never depressed by his failure to catch the fish and he believed, with his persistence, he would catch a fish. “A man can be destroyed, but not defeated.” Here is the classical sentence from this book. Heroism can be shown in this sentence. Undoubtedly, the old man is really like a hero in his own life. From my perspective, the old man is just the writer himself. Hemingway was once a soldier. He even went to the jungle to catch the beast in Africa and battle with the master-hand on the boxing ring. Hemingway himself appreciated heroism a lot. Since we can see the heroism in his books.

        The young boy touched me the most is that his gratitude to the old man. When he stayed with the old man and learnt the skills to fish, he was thankful for the old man even though they could not catch any fish together. But as the boy’s parents knew that they didn’t catch any fish, they advised the boy to leave the old man. After that, the boy learnt fishing from other fisherman and they caught several big fish. But the boy never forgot the old man because he was the first one who taught him fish. Everyday the boy would wait for him to check out if he is safe, not for showing off his harvest. And through the old man’s teaching, the young boy has really grown into a good boy not just learning how to fish. 

        Finally, I really enjoy this book since it teach me a lot, like strong-mind, heroism, optimism and being grateful.
