  This is a required reading for senior high school students nowadays. It is an introductory book about the social structure of Chinese village. It mainly introduces these following aspects: the very feature of rural places and acquaintance society, the different patterns and the organizations of the villages, and the ruling of Li. 

  The classical Chinese villages are societies which does not have strangers, because people know each other since the beginning of their lives. The elder people even know the obstacles that younger people would face in the later part of their life, as the society is not changing rapidly like the urban society nowadays. In this sense, the stubbornness of some elder people is understandable as following the previous experiences used to be the effective way in the past.

  The book also introduces the organizations of rural places such as the family, clan, and their relationship with the individuals. His view is that the structure of the organizations is flexible and are greatly influenced by the elder. This is because Chinese society is unchanged in a very long period, which makes the elder people very prestigious in the local places.
