"A person can be destroyed, but not defeated." For individuals, courage is a spirit; For a nation, courage is even more a force.
If you are a fisherman and haven't caught any fish for 84 consecutive days, would you choose to continue? If you are a fisherman and catch a big marlin that is much larger than your fishing boat, will you fight with it for two days and nights? Sandiago, the hero, is a "unlucky" old man. He did not catch fish for 84 consecutive days. On the 85th day, he went to sea. After two days and three nights of fighting, he finally caught a 1500-pound marlin. However, the weather was unpredictable. On the way home, the old man was attacked by sharks for many times. The old man fought with sharks to death, but the marlin was eaten up by sharks. The old man finally dragged home only a bare fish skeleton. During this period, the old man, with extraordinary courage and amazing perseverance, endured the unbearable loneliness, hunger, fatigue and pain of ordinary people, and repeatedly exceeded the limits of human beings. But we didn't see a drop of tears from the loser, but we clearly saw the proud smile of the strong when he failed.
In fact, the book "The Old Man and the Sea" does not have any gorgeous language to set off the character characteristics of the characters, nor does it have any magnificent words to enhance the atmosphere. It is only simple and straightforward, but it is enough to move people's hearts and give people an impassioned power. This ugly old man looks ordinary, but he is different from ordinary people. He has the perseverance and amazing courage to surpass ordinary people. Although he knows that his opponent is stronger than him, he still decides to fight bravely.
After reading The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway, the great American writer, I found that Santiago was such a strong, brave and optimistic old man. Some people say that Mr. Hemingway's works have two eternal themes: courage and death. In the protagonist of this novel, I saw the crisscross of two themes. Indeed, with courage, you will have the power to move forward in the face of all difficulties. Without courage, you are like a ship without sails.
Now, are we lacking the quality of courage. A few days ago, I saw a news on the Internet that a woman picked up a fallen old man, but was wronged by the old man as a hitter. I found out that she was wronged by looking at the video. After the incident, someone asked the woman, "Will you lift the fallen old man like this again?" She said after a moment of silence: "I will still help, because this is the basic moral of life." In today's society, it is also a kind of courage to lift the fallen old man. I think it is brave to dare to fight with the big fish to death; It is brave to take up arms and fight for the motherland. And those around us who give up their superior lives to join the army are also brave; It is more brave to help the elderly who fall down. Let these brave inspire us, warm us, and let us no longer feel cold and depressed. This is a lonely journey. A person rowed a small boat slowly to the open sea, and was dragged by a big fish in the boundless and complex ocean currents. The feeling of panic loss is like a person looking for a way out in the dark forest. The old man can only talk to himself, fish and the sea.
"A person is not born to be defeated." "You can destroy it, but you can't defeat him." The external body can accept torture, but the internal will is sacred and inviolable. The defeated can be the body, but it must not be our will. The biggest enemy is always yourself. When a person's will is indestructible, then nothing will make you fear again.
The so-called "bad luck" never made a ripple in the old man's heart. He was always faced with the challenge of life and death on the sea, but he never had the mentality of withdrawal. How superficial it is to reflect on the setbacks, tribulations and thorns that we now define.
Although the old man did not bring the marlin home safely, he was not the final winner. But from another perspective, isn't the old man a respectable winner? Because he did not compromise and surrender to the sea, to the marlin, or to the shark from the beginning to the end, he won a victory in spirit, even though he was defeated. On the rough sea, the broken boat, the cold sea breeze and the strong smell of blood may be what people are really afraid of.
