In the opening scene of this essay, the heroine Hester Prynne, who is released from prison with her three-month-old baby in her arms, is considered to have committed adultery and is punished by wearing the scarlet letter of shame. The jailer routinely pulls her from the cell to the door, when Hester makes a movement to push him away, that movement contains a strong natural strength, but also is a demonstration of her nature, and calmly walks to the cell door, the red letter by the attention of the crowd has become a special symbol and ornament on her body. The symbol, red symbolizes the extremely rich imagination and Hester's complex feelings, not only side expression of Hester is a relatively strong character and a very passionate person. Her marriage was more of an adventure, as she went to live in Amsterdam with her husband Chillingworth after her marriage, but their marriage was not a union of love, and the main reason for the marriage was the bondage of interest and religion. In those days, many married women had to be accompanied by their husbands in order to travel to other places, but Hester did not have such consciousness or did not feel the need to do so, and her husband did not have to wait for him to set off together, a fact that reflects the strong independent spirit and self-awareness of Hester Prynne.

After her release from prison, Hester maintains the image of a lonely lady outside of society, excluded and alienated by society, she has more opportunities and space to think freely, but it also leads her to the "dark labyrinth of the mind", and the struggle between her personal nature and Puritanism makes her more painful and confused, After all, Hester could not immediately break free from the framework of Puritanism. After the meeting with Chillingworth, then, it becomes clear to Hester that the only thing she can do is to abandon the system of religious values represented by the scarlet letter, that is, to choose the dignity of the human person over the dignity of religion. The meeting with Dimmesdale shows that her confession did not have the desired effect, as it is written that "the whole seven years of extrajudicial life and shame were only a preparation for this last moment", and through the "martyrdom" confession she wanted to convince Dimmesdale that She has turned her sins into good deeds. Then comes the scene that the reader is most looking forward to, where Hester has even given up the scarlet letter, not to mention that it is a symbol of repentance and that the confusion that was once a struggle in her mind has been transformed into the secret joy that is now present, even in her last appearance in the marketplace. The last chapter of the novel is about the sea. In the last chapter of the novel, Hester returns to New England and wears the scarlet letter again, but this time the scarlet letter is not a symbol of West's sins but can fill the void left in the mind after giving up something.
