The Scarlet Letter
徐兰2004
While reading this book, a question always lingered in my mind, why
didn't Hester leave this place, when she could have left it, as she
encouraged the vicar in the forest, she could have gone elsewhere, even
back to England, just to change her name, she was so good at her craft.
After reading and thinking about it, it seems that she slowly understood
why she didn't want to leave the town, and returned to this place until
she was old, still wearing the red letter, because this place is the
place where she and the vicar fell in love. There are two red letters
in this book, one tangible and worn on the chest, the last of which has
the same effect as the cross on the nun's chest. The red letter gives
its wearer a divine light that shields her from all kinds of danger.
Even if she fell into the hands of a thief, she was able to escape
unharmed. Many people believe in the legend that an Indian once aimed
his bow at the symbol and hit the target, but somehow the arrow fell to
the ground, leaving Hester unharmed. The meaning of this tangible red
letter changes according to the character of its owner, as is sometimes
the case, for a person whose heart is bright, even in the midst of the
mud, is still immaculate! The priest is the invisible red letter. He is
timid compared to Hester, but this is the result of his heavy religious
bondage. It is not that he does not want to confess his "sins"
publicly, but his desire to do so is too much entwined with religious
consciousness of "atonement" and "introspection",
and he is therefore bound by it in every way. He was subject to internal
condemnation and external scrutiny; he had a love of his own, but he had
to regard it as evil. He struggled for seven years in pain, and although
he finally achieved moral purification and the ascension of his soul by
revealing the brand of "sin" on his chest, he was glorified by
his colleagues as a saint who brought the sins of the world to heaven,
without truly allowing the world to acknowledge and accept their love.
Hester's soul was so noble, she was strong, resilient and faithful to
love. Although considered sinful, her soul was innocent and pure. Her
spirit rose to become the embodiment of truth, goodness and beauty! Love
is sinless.
