Book Review on Jane Eyre
Mantong
Jane Eyre is a story about the growth of an orphan girl from a humble
background. The protagonist Jane’s parents died and was forested with
her aunt. There the young Jane was abused mentally and physically by her
aunt and cousin. She was then sent to Lowood Mercy School for education.
After growing up Jane came to Thornfield Manor to work as a tutor in
order to pursue an independent and free life. She fell in love with
Rochester, the owner of the estate, but later discovered that Rochester
had a wife—a mad woman who had been imprisoned in the attic.
Heartbroken, Jane fled the manor alone, wandered around, lived a hard
life, and later returned to him because she had been thinking about
Rochester in her heart. By this time, the manor was unrecognizable and
Rochester was blind. But she still loved Rochester deeply and married
him. From the novel we can see that Jane
Eyre, the protagonist, has taken practical actions to defend her
dignity. Whether she was bullied at her aunt’s home mentally and
physically, damaged in the school or in the love with Rochester, she has
always adhered to the purity of her heart, showing her self-reliant
personality and beautiful ideals.
The most moving point in the novel is that during the love between Jane
and Rochester, Jane never felt inferior because of her humble origin and
plain looking. She dared to pursue her own ideals and love, even
despised the arrogance of the people in authority and laughed at their
foolishness. In the novel when Ingram and other dignitaries go to
Rochester’s home for a banquet , they laugh at Jane’s class origin and
deliberately match Ingram and Rochester. But Jane is very clear that
Ingram is not better than her except for identity and appearance. Here,
Jane has a comment on Ingram."She was very showy, but she was not
genuine: she had a fine person, many brilliant attainments; but her mind
was pool, her heart barren by nature: nothing bloomed spontaneously on
that soil; no unforced natural fruit delighted by its freshness. She was
not good; she was not original :she used to repeat sounding phrases from
books: she never offered, not had an opinion of her own." But in
Jane’s view, there is no love between them. What they both care about is
each other’s status . Therefore she is not jealous of Ingram. In the
novel when Jane learned that Rochester was married and his wife was
still alive, she felt cheated and insulted. There is a very classic
quotation in the book,"You think I’m going to insignificant here?
Do you think I am a robot without feelings? Do you think I am poor,
obscure, plain small mu mesons, I have no soul and no heart? You think
wrong, you and I have as much soul and full as much heart. If god give
me a little beauty, a lot of money, I will you to leave me, just like I
have to leave you. I’m not in the rules of social life and customs to
talk with you but my heart with your hearts. Jane always believes that
she and Rochester are speaking through their hearts and she can also
pursue love equally. It is obvious that Jane is a seemingly weak, strong
and dignified woman. The above narration starts from the
content of the novel ,and the artistic characteristics of the novel are
also a highlight. First, the author makes use of psychological
description to the depict the personality characteristic of each other.
Second, the author excels at creating a grooming and frightening
atmosphere to render the background. Thirdly, the author repeatedly
quotes the Bible, myths, epics, etc to endow the novel with classical
significance. Forth, a great feature of these novel is its passion and
poetry. Rochester and Jane often use poetic words to express their
passion. Finally,
the theme of this novel can be viewed from many angles. It eulogizes a
female image who is not satisfied with the status quo, unwilling to be
humiliated and dare to fight inequality. It advocates equality between
men and women and resisted social prejudiced, and everyone has the right
to pursue love, ideals and personality. It encourages all people,
especially women, to be self-respecting, self-reliant and self-improved,
to keep their original intentions in mind, to strengthen beliefs and to
pursue their own happiness.
As a reader and college student, I have also gained a lot. Jane Eyre
gives me a lesson that no matter what difficulties and challenge I
encounter in my future life, I should not be knocked down. Everyone
should learn to be independent, self-respecting and self-improved. I
firmly believe that I should strive for and control my own good life.
