Struggle of fate
Although American novelist Ernest Hemingway has been gone for more than half a century, his work is still on many people's bedside books, like a fine wine, which has grown richer and more influential with the passing of time. The Old Man and the Sea, which is one of Hemingway's most famous works, tells the story of a man's struggle against his own hard fate.
The story tells the story of Santiago, who did not fish for 84 days, determined to go out to sea to fish for a living. After three days at sea, he accidentally caught a marlin bigger than an entire fishing boat. On the way home, he fought with sharks who came to grab free food, and finally left with huge fish bones. The whole book portrays the hero as a tough and brave man. As the fishing hero said to himself: A man can be destroyed, but not defeated. In this story, what impressed me most was the old man's struggle against his fate.
In the middle of the story, the old man catches a big fish. It seems to the reader that his fortunes have improved. But at the end of the story, the fish, which has been caught with great pains, is eaten by the shark only a huge skeleton. The old man still had nothing. The next morning, he had to go out to sea again, and accept the challenge of fate once more for his own survival. In this episode, the author wrote a paragraph from the perspective of others. The general idea is that someone saw a huge fish bone on the beach and sighed. If a person meets a painful fate, he must bear it by himself. No one else can help you. Therefore, the old man never complained to anyone about his treatment in the story. Because anyone who has experienced real suffering and been in real suffering knows that no one else can help you.
At the end of the story, the author tells us that people cannot fight against their own fate by their own strength. In this story, the author compares himself to an old man, and refers to his cruel fate by the harsh environment, the stormy sea, and the sharks in the sea. If a man is unfortunate enough to meet a cruel fate, he can only accept it, no matter how painful it is. Just like the old man in the story, he had to go fishing every day even though he was in his last years. Because it was his destiny, and there was no escaping it.
In the novel, the old man dreams of a lion several times. The lion here is a symbol of the yearning and longing for a better life and the memory of a better life. We can also understand that the lion is a kind of hope that the old man creates for himself in a cruel environment. It is this hope that has sustained the old man to fight on. However, this hope cannot be realized in the end, only in a dream. But even so, the old man stubbornly fought against his cruel fate. The sentence "A man can be destroyed but not defeated" in the novel reminds me of the words of another great master from the East -- "Real warrior, dare to face the dripping blood, face the bleak life". It is these words that inspire generation after generation to forge ahead even in the face of difficulties. We can experience numerous setbacks, but the courage to start over will not bd defeated; We can take numerous blows, but the following ambition will not be broken.
To be frank, I have read this novel when I was in junior high school. The first time I read this story, I was moved to tears by the old man's tenacity and perseverance. Because I was young at that time, my idea would be relatively simple, thinking that the old man will have a good ending. When I was a child, I always thought that one could conquer the world. It's only in the last few years, through a lot of things, that going back and reading the story has given me another meaning. The Old Man and the Sea is an excellent work that won the Nobel Prize for Literature. When people read this novel with different moods, they will get different feelings. When people are in different environments to read this novel, they also have different feelings. This is what people say, "In the heart of a thousand people, there are a thousand Hamlets." And it is this kind of novel that deserves the word ‘classic’.
Sadly and helplessly, Hemingway, the author of this novel, ended his life with his beloved double-barreled shotgun. Like the hero in this novel, he finally succumbed to his fate.
