Reflections on Tess
马西金
Tess is strong and brave, and has the spirit of self-sacrifice. After
the defilement of Alec and the death of her child, she hasn't lost hope
in life, but lived bravely and loved others. After her husband learned
about her past and abandoned her, she sacrificed herself to be Alec's
mistress in exchange for the survival of her family. When her husband
changed his mind and came to her, Tess thought Alec had ruined her life,
so she killed him in a rage, and finally she was hanged. Tess's tragic
story reflects bourgeois decadent ethics, hypocritical religion and
unfair legal system. Everything that happened to her is regrettable.
Such a pure and kind girl should not have had these painful experiences.
At the moment when her resentment and anger broke out, she chose extreme
ways to free herself. To some extent, that can be understood and
empathized. Her story can also show that the background of an era has a
heavy and profound influence on people.
