what is the matter?

What confused me is why the girl left the boy when they have a chance to make a live  together.I can't understand as life is so short to end.What's more, the girl didn't need to care much about her loyalty if the boy loved her in heart.It was the war and the difficult surroundings that caused all of those after all.Somaybe this is why hemingwei wrote the short story.
