Transient love during the war

《A very short story》，based on the background of World War Ⅰ,told us a transient and sentimental love story in a still as well as brief style of writing. Concise as the author had composed ,the story left an infinite margin for readers to imagine. What led this love affair to death? And what true love is? Maybe the answers are mountainous but varied from person to person.

  I have read this story three times, but each time of reading gives me refreshing feelings. Interestingly, the author have never exposed the hero’s name to readers for even once , instead, he mentioned the girl’s name ——Luz, almost every sentence, which was really thought-provoking. Perhaps this fragment of love ,though looking special and regretful, was just a common phenomenon during the war? So many male soldiers were on the battalion ready for the battle , having no time to keep a relationship with a girl or even look through the letters from home. Meanwhile ,girls were missing their lovers who may lose contact with girls for days ,even months. Accidentally, Luz was one of them. Though Luz loved her man so much that she followed him without any marriage certificate, years of waiting eventually ran out of all her patience and anticipation. What Luz wanted was just a long-term company ,which her man in the battle couldn’t afford her for the time being .Luz had no idea that how long she would wait for him like this ,without any hope .When passion faded away , intelligence and saneness promoted her to rethink calmly. After all, she made her own choice to leave though she was still in love with him.But dramatically,Luz chose the major of battalion at last, who occupied the same career as the man she loved ,which may implied that Luz just gave in to the destiny ,but still with her true emotion remained.

  According to my reading feedback ,the author had seeded the misery ending in the story for at least three times.At the beginning of the story ,the author described Luz as a cool and fresh girl even in the hot night, which emphasizes that Luz is a girl with saneness and calmness.What’s more , in the middle of the story , the author said that they hadn’t enough time for banns and birth certificate ,which means the man couldn’t provide a formal certificate for their relationship,accelerating Luz’s sense of insecurity. The last time when the author mentioned that the man have not got the letters from Luz until armistic, I guessed their relationship has gone to the end.

  Taken the story as a whole ,from where I stand ,it is the endless war that became the main reason for their breaking-up. The very long war exhausted every restless person ,draining out of their patience to wait for lovers, anticipation to expect beauty and hope to wish.We can’t reproach Luz for behaving so cool or realistic because she did sacrifice most of her youth for this floating love . And thereafter, she must consider for herself as a single lady with no ability to survive during discord time.That’s why we reckoned Hemingway as a typical realistic writer ,who died of owing to the huge gap between reality and his ideal world.
