The first thing in the next morning, he asked his men to collect some bark,hemp waste, old cloth and fishing nets.

Then, they cut the materials into very small pieces and mixed them together.After that, they crushed the pieces into a pulp. At last, they spread the pulp over the bamboo racks to dry out.

The next day, the pulp was dry and had become a thin layer.

"This is a good thin piece of paper! It can be used for writing!" Cai Lun was very happy with the result.
