Lin Zexu was the first national hero in modern China who took the lead
in fighting against western colonial aggression and was a patriot who
matched his words with his deeds. He is known as "the first person
to see the world with his eyes open." The fight against smoking,
led by him, showed to the world the Chinese people's deep hatred of
opium and their strong determination to resist foreign aggression,
showed that the Chinese people are a people who love freedom and are not
afraid of violence, and also opened the prelude to China's modern
democratic revolution. In 1858, Marx affirmed Lin Zexu's anti-smoking
feat in his treatise on the opium trade. Lin Zexu was a politician who
did not shy away from risks and committed himself to the country. He not
only showed great heroism in the face of aggressors and bravely defended
national sovereignty and national dignity, but also always adhered to
the patriotic concept and never wavered even when he was attacked by
domestic political enemies. Throughout his life, he was honest, dutiful
in his duties, motivated by good and eliminated evil, committed to
reform, developed the economy, and paid attention to people's
livelihood. The famous poem "to seek death for the benefit of the
country, or to avoid it because of good or bad" expressed his
determination to sacrifice his lofty thoughts and feelings for the
interests of the country and the nation. This kind of noble patriotism,
regardless of personal gains and losses, is the spiritual source of the
Chinese nation to survive hardships, and is still widely praised by
people today.
