Life transmigration
A short story that tells us a strange plot may not be that meaningful. But as a reader, I can choose to think over and over again after reading however short a story.
After all, the message itself is a little bit absurd. The father got old---in fact going through many many years when his grandchild is in her childhood---just to wait a streetcar. It is hardly seen in real life and so comes the question :Why did the writer O. Henry tell us the story ?
From my point of view,I think he wanted to tell us something about the transmigration. Have you ever thought that why John Smother waited for the streetcar for that long ? Maybe it's the god's joke that test the family's love to each other. It's John Smother's wife's never giving up finding her husband that she held up the family and lived to see the miracle.it's his daught's love for him that she and his husband still lived in her dad's house. It's daughter's love for her husband that she held back him ,avoiding a tragedy. And also, it's old John Smother's persistence---believing finally he could see one streetcar and go back home that made the family's dream come true. It's nothing but the life transmigration. The miracle was just the reward for true love.
