I think, were the feelings in which Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter,
and though Prynne betrayed her husband, she did so unintentionally;
Dimmesdale, the most famous saint in the land, fell in love with a
married woman, and bore a daughter; Chillingworth, on the contrary,
seemed to be the victim, but he had lost pity and mercy in order to take
revenge, and had become repulsive.
