Reading report-A Cup of Tea

Review 1

 Today I read a novel named A Cup of Tea,which is written by Katherine Mansfield.At the beginning of the book,the description of the heroine is so impressive that I can’t put it down.The writer’s style of writing is ironic and critical but humorous.

 The story tells that a fashionable and rich lady named Rosemary met a poor girl who begged for some money because of hunger.The lady was seized by a whim to take the girl home to show her mercy.However,when the woman heard her husband praising the girl for her beauty,she felt frightened and sent the girl away immediately.Apparently,Rosemary is a stodgy woman with hypocrisy and vanity.

As a matter of fact,I can’t understand every sentence well.So I’d like to read it once again later.

 With what seems a hurried ending,the novel leaves us a meaningful blank.On the face of it,Rosemary is a peacockish and feigned lady who enjoys the flatter and admiration of others,especially those who are poor.However,she is actually the poorest one.Although her husband is rich,she will be bothered by her own infinite desire once in a while.She wants too much because the back of her heart is so empty that she can never feel satisfaction.Why she took the girl hoe is that she thought that to affect to be kind might comfort her void.And everything seemed to go well until her husband said that girl was pretty.She become terrified and jealous.She was feared that she would lost the favor of her husband.As a result,after sending the girl away,she asked him,’Am I pretty?’,with exploration.Apparently,she was not sure the love between her husband and her.From these,we can see that the lady is frail and poor.She is lack of satisfaction because of inner emptiness.

 There are lot of ‘Rosemary’s. She is a typical example of those who are short of spiritual satisfaction and only pursue rich material.Although they look like swinging and enviable superficially,they actually are more woeful and poorer than ordinary people.They are easy to be broken down and despaired.

We all need build a psychic shelter.Only by this way can we stand no matter how strong outer storm and wave are.
