Sister Carrie
Sister Carrie is one of the masterpieces of American literature in the 20th century and one of Theotto Dreiser's representative works. This novel takes the urban life as the background, takes a rural girl Sister Carrie as the protagonist, through her personal struggle and ups and downs, vividly shows the monetary interest relationship between people in the capitalist society and the change of moral concept.
Sister Carrie was a beautiful and simple country girl who had come to the city in search of happiness and opportunity. However, the city life is not as beautiful as she imagined, but let her in trouble. In this world full of temptation and competition, Sister Carrie has to give up her principles and moral concepts in order to survive and self-esteem, and finally embarks on the road of degradation and destruction.
After reading this novel, I deeply felt the impact of social changes and moral changes on the fate of individuals. In capitalist society, money and interests have become the only criteria to measure people's value and status, and the relationship between people has become cold and distant. In such an environment, it is easy for people to lose their direction and moral bottom line, and to give up their principles and dignity in order to survive and satisfy their desires. The novel also made me deeply aware of the limitations of personal struggle. Although Sister Carrie achieved some success in her personal struggle, her fate was ultimately determined by society. Her fall and destruction was not her own fault, but the result of the defects of social institutions and moral values. Therefore, we cannot simply rely on individual struggle to change their own fate, but also need to seek more fundamental solutions from the perspective of social system and moral concepts.
Sister Carrie is a profound and thought-provoking novel, which through the fate of Sister Carrie shows the changes of money interests and moral concepts among people in capitalist society. After reading this novel, I not only have a deeper understanding of life and society
