Sexual contradiction
李玉萍
Sister Carrie is a novel that reveals the contradictions between social
reality and human nature deeply. Through Sister Carrie's experience, it
shows the social phenomenon of the disparity between rich and poor and
moral decay in American metropolises in the early 20th century. Carrie
in the novel, a naive small-town girl, with a yearning for a better
life, came to the prosperous Chicago, but unfortunately became a victim
of money-oriented society. Her life course, from being seduced by
Drouet, a suitor, to becoming the mistress of Hurstwood, a hotel
manager, in order to pursue a higher material life, is full of chance
and inevitability. Carrie's fate is full of chance. In the process of
pursuing her dreams, she constantly changes her life style and values,
but finally finds that material abundance can not bring spiritual satisfaction.
