SUMMARY

The protagonist Oliver was born in a workhouse, and his mother passed away at the time of his birth. He was sent to an orphanage and lived a life of lukewarm clothing, warmth, and abuse. He grew up slowly, and the parish clerks were dissatisfied with his demands for food. They thought of selling him to the owner of a coffin shop to work. He also experienced oppression and unfair treatment there, and fled to London overnight. When he first arrived there, he met a clever ghost and accidentally entered a den of thieves.
