The work written by American writer Kate Chopin in 1899,
"Awakening," was once banned and was only lifted five to six
years later, considered an early feminist work. Although more than a
hundred years have passed, reading Awakening today, I am still amazed by
Kate Chopin's courage in proposing the idea of "never sacrificing
oneself for children or anyone else" in Awakening. Today, a mother
who dares to make this sound will still be seen as rebellious by society
and her parents. As an individual, I understand Edna in Awakening. As a
mother, I am willing to sacrifice for myself in certain situations, but
I do not deny Edna's choice. Sacrifice, seemingly painful. In some
situations, it is the happiness of the victim. Sacrifice is an optional
individual right that can only come from the true will of the victim,
without the need to measure the individual's sacrifice based on status
or inferiority. I believe that in the eyes of many male readers, Edna
portrayed by Kate Chopin is a person who can easily find smoking
patterns. Edna, who lives in high society, seems to have all the
beautiful things she can have: beauty, talent, childhood, indulging her
husband, admiring her, loving her companions, and no need to worry about
living a luxurious life. Not only in the ninth century, the vast
majority of modern society was pursuing what she had. However, this
greedy woman was so ashamed that she was even dissatisfied and used a
killing method to get rid of everything she had. This is Edna with male
eyes. They don't understand that having a sense of satisfaction on the
surface is what causes unbearable pain to the inner emptiness. They will
also not understand that it is precisely because of their desire for
spiritual comfort beyond superficial wealth and happy life that they no
longer have mediocre bodies, but have their own souls. If Edna is a busy
person who struggles to eat three meals a day, she will have no time to
express her needs for the spiritual world. If she is as content as
others to follow the baton of her husband and children, to be content
with her companions, and to flirt with men, she will be happy. How
mediocre this happiness is! Just like a person, no matter how many
hardships they have to go through and how much sweat they sweat in order
to survive, they don't want to hum happily in the circle like pigs. So
Edna, who was different from her companions, suffered pain and anxiety,
but pitied them for being completely oblivious to mundane life. She was
happy to leave her husband's luxurious house and move into her own
world. In an era where women are no longer dependent on men, Edna style
extramarital affairs are no longer explosive news, but emotional
tragedies will continue to unfold. The emotions that Edna needs will be
difficult to satisfy in any era, because in emotions, men are always the
lower half of the animal, women are the upper half of the animal, and
the nature shield set by the creator for men is eternal. Robert truly
loved Edna, but his love was not as eternal as Edna had hoped. Although
Edna was waiting for Robert, she couldn't resist the desire of her body
and the sexual activity of another male, and her spiritual world needed
Robert to fill. Robert's spiritual world can reject Edna regardless of
whether he engages in sexual behavior with others. Edna realized that
the void could not be changed by this man or other men, so she chose to
sink into the sea. Edna was a representative of the early self-awareness
of sexuality, but her choice of death proved that her awakening was
incomplete and incomplete. Edna has never truly detached herself from
her dependence on a patriarchal society. Leaving her husband is nothing
but bravely transitioning from relying on one man to expecting another.
Death is not Edna's tragedy. She silently declared that she would not
sacrifice herself for anyone, but she never truly allowed herself to be
above anyone. 回复(共0条)
