Naudi Allan Edgar Poe (1809-1849), a famous American novelist, poet, and
critic in the 19th century. He was born into a family of wandering
performers in Boston, and at the age of 3, his mother passed away. He
was taken in by a wealthy merchant, John Allan, and received a good
education. At the age of 17, he entered the University of Virginia but
dropped out due to alcohol abuse. At 21, he entered West Point Military
Academy for further study but was dismissed for neglecting his duties.
He then began his writing career. He wrote poetry, novels, and literary
criticism, and later found that gothic horror stories were very popular,
so he turned to writing horror stories and achieved considerable
success. In 1835, Poe married his cousin, but his wife passed away due
to illness more than ten years later, leading him to drown his sorrows
in alcohol. In 1849, he ended his life in a thorough drunken state in
Baltimore. Poe produced around sixty to seventy short stories in his
lifetime and advocated the motto "art for art's sake." His
creative theory and practice were the precursor of Western modernism and
had a profound impact on the development of Western modernist poetry and
fiction. He is also known as the "founder of detective
fiction" and the "father of horror stories." Initially, I
thought this book was a collection of multiple mysterious and
fantastical stories, but it turned out to be in the style of horror stories.
